Lyric Singers

The Lyric Singers began in 1972 with a group of 8 talented singers. Within 10 years the choir had grown to 22 and earned a reputation as great entertainers. By 1989 the numbers had swelled to 58 but this was short lived and at present there are 35 members.

The choir has always presented a wide range of light musical compositions, ballads, popular songs from shows, as well as sacred music and oratorios. Over the years, the choir has performed some major works, including Steiner’s Crucifixion. Fauré’s Requiem and extracts from Elijah and the Messiah. They have often combined with other Wanganui groups to present ‘The Last Night of the Proms’ and fund raising concerts for the local Hospice appeal.

In the 47 years since the choir’s inception, more that 250 concerts have been staged to raise funds for many charitable purposes, to express appreciation for assistance given by other organizations, to commemorate special events, or just to entertain and provide enjoyment for the public. Because of the choir’s dedication, local charities have benefited by more than $25,000 and promising young musicians have been helped financially.
